2014 EFCOG Annual Report

EFCOG ISM/QA meeting, October 2104

Everybody –

Keeping this blog up and current is harder than it looks, especially for one who has preferences for ENFP (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator).

After some back-and-forth about it, we are indeed having another meeting in Las Vegas October 28, 29, and 30, which hopefully most of you know about. There will be a leadership meeting on the afternoon of October 27.

We are meeting at the same Las Vegas site we used in the past, the Nevada Field Office. There are new security requirements concerning using drivers licenses from certain states and U. S. territories as photo identification. These are Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma and Washington. These driver’s licenses do not meet NNSA requirements for site access. Acceptable secondary forms of photographic ID include: U.S. passport, military ID card and other state, federal or local government issued ID. Included on this web site are any agendas developed by leads, the agenda for the overall meeting, and information on the Nevada Field Office and security.

One of the items that will be discussed is the re-organization of the EFCOG and what the potential impact for all of us might be.

It looks like an interesting meeting, and a good thing, too. Otherwise, Las Vegas is such a boring place. We need the DOE meetings to liven things up…….

May EFCOG (ISM/QA WG) meeting

The Integrated Safety Management and Quality Assurance Working Group (ISM/QA) met in Washington, DC, May 19-22, 2014.

On the afternoon of May 19, a leadership integration meeting was held to confirm deliverables for subgroup meetings over the next three days.

The following day’s meeting started with a session for all attendees. John McDonald, the new chair of the ISM/QA Working Group, opened the joint session. Pat Worthington (DOE), Matt Moury (DOE), Jim Hutton (DOE), Dan Bullen (DNFSB), Jim Winter (DOE), and Ted Giltz (Hanford Hammer) presented topics.

The EFCOG web site also has notes on the joint session and proceedings from these subgroups: Safety Culture, QA, QA Policies and Procedures, Supply Chain, Work Management, and Human Performance Improvement.

For me, the meeting was all about doing a substantial amount of work. The Safety Culture group, where most of my efforts were concentrated, had a big task this time. I encourage you to e-mail or call leaders of the subgroups for more details. Or if you know someone on the EFCOG working group or subgroup at your site, swing by for a talk.

I usually have a sense of openness and sharing at these meetings, and this one was no exception. We are a group with a shared set of philosophies, trying to solve problems, exchange ideas, and improve performance. We sometimes have, uh, passionate discussions, and at the end we find ways to agree and move forward.

I intend to publish these notes three or four times a year. Next will be a short reminder about the meeting in Las Vegas, to be held October 28-30. I will give you as much information as possible about the expected agendas. If you want more information, or different information than I am supplying, please comment on the blog. I am very open to changing and improving this effort.
